Cancer incidence data from two large cancer surveys and cancer mortality data for the entire United States were used to estimate trends in lung cancer incidence and mortality rates among whites for specific age groups during the 10 years 1969--78. Data for the Third National Cancer Survey were from 1969 to 1971; data for the Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results Program were from 1973 to 1978. For both incidence and mortality, the rates for women increased much more rapidly than the rates for men, except in the oldest age group (greater than or equal to 85).
