The effects of transient increases in UVB radiation on plants are not well known; whether cumulative damage dominates or, alternately, an increase in photoprotection and recovery periods ameliorates any negative effects. We investigated photosynthetic capacity and metabolite accumulation of grapevines (Vitis vinifera Cabernet Sauvignon) in response to UVB fluctuations under four treatments: fluctuating UVB (FUV) and steady UVB radiation (SUV) at similar total biologically effective UVB dose (2.12 and 2.

Poly(ADP-ribosyl)ation (PARylation) is a reversible post-translational protein modification that has profound regulatory functions in metabolism, development and immunity, and is conserved throughout the eukaryotic lineage. Contrary to metazoa, many components and mechanistic details of PARylation have remained unidentified in plants. Here we present the transcriptional co-regulator RADICAL-INDUCED CELL DEATH1 (RCD1) as a plant PAR-reader.

Plant photosynthetic and mitochondrial electron transfer chains (ETCs) are delicate environmental sensors and active players in stress acclimation. The performance of photosynthetic ETC can be deduced from chlorophyll a fluorescence. This makes chlorophyll fluorescence imaging a powerful tool to study plant stress in vivo.

Article Synopsis
  • Iron superoxide dismutase 1 (FSD1) is an enzyme located in various parts of the cell that plays a key role in protecting against oxidative stress but its exact function is not fully understood.
  • The study reveals that FSD1's antioxidant abilities are influenced by copper availability in the growth medium, and mutants with lower copper showed diminished superoxide decomposition capacity and increased oxidative damage when exposed to methyl viologen (MV).
  • Findings also indicate that FSD1 is critical for maintaining redox balance in chloroplasts and that its absence leads to changes in protein abundance related to oxidative stress defense.

Mitochondria are tightly embedded within metabolic and regulatory networks that optimize plant performance in response to environmental challenges. The best-known mitochondrial retrograde signaling pathway involves stress-induced activation of the transcription factor NAC DOMAIN CONTAINING PROTEIN 17 (ANAC017), which initiates protective responses to stress-induced mitochondrial dysfunction in Arabidopsis (Arabidopsis thaliana). Posttranslational control of the elicited responses, however, remains poorly understood.
