High-burden cholera outbreaks, spreading beyond the traditional cholera-endemic countries, have been reported since 2021 in the WHO African region. Member states in the region have committed to the global goal of cholera elimination by 2030. To track progress towards this goal, WHO-African countries adopted a regional cholera prevention and control framework in 2018.

Article Synopsis
  • - The study established normal reference ranges for spleen size in different age groups of healthy individuals in North-Eastern Nigeria to serve as a baseline for assessing spleen size in patients with sickle cell disease.
  • - Spleen sizes were measured using ultrasound in both healthy controls and steady-state sickle cell disease patients, with classifications into small, normal, or enlarged sizes based on age-specific values.
  • - Findings indicated that among the sickle cell disease patients, 8.87% had small spleens, 33.3% had normal-sized spleens, and 10.3% had enlarged spleens, providing important data for monitoring spleen health in malaria-endemic areas.

Article Synopsis
  • Porcine parvoviruses (PPVs) are major contributors to reproductive issues in pigs globally, with eight genetic variants identified across four genera.
  • PPV7, first found in the USA in 2016, has spread to Europe, Asia, and South America, and was detected in pig farms in Italy facing reproductive challenges.
  • In a study conducted in Sardinia, PPV7 was found in 20.59% of domestic and wild pig samples, with higher co-infection rates of Porcine Circovirus 2 and 3 in PPV7-positive pigs, and molecular analysis revealed a high frequency of viral recombination.

Malaria is considered an important cause of morbidity and mortality among people living with sickle cell disease (SCD). This has partly been attributed to the loss of splenic function that occurs early in the disease process. We conducted a cross-sectional study and determined the frequency of malaria infection among SCD patients and explored the association with spleen's presence on ultrasonography and spleen function assessed using the frequency of Howell-Jolly bodies (HJBs).

Low-frequency aperture arrays represent sensitive instruments to detect signals from radio astronomic sources situated in the universe. In Italy, the Sardinia Aperture Array Demonstrator (SAAD) consists of an ongoing project of the Italian National Institute for Astrophysics (INAF) aimed to install an aperture array constituted of 128 dual-polarized Vivaldi antennas at the Sardinia Radio Telescope (SRT) site. The originally envisaged 128 elements of SAAD were re-scoped to the 16 elements of its precursor named SADino, with the aim to quickly test the system with a digital beam-former based on the Italian Tile Processing Module (iTPM) digital back-end.
