Donor-acceptor cyclopropanes containing a phenolic group as the donor undergo deprotonation and isomerization to form the corresponding quinone methides. This innovative strategy was applied to achieve (4 + 1)-annulation of cyclopropanes with sulfur ylides, affording functionalized dihydrobenzofurans.
