Bipolar Clark-Type Oxygen Electrode Arrays for Imaging and Multiplexed Measurements of the Respiratory Activity of Cells.

Various miniature Clark-type oxygen electrodes (COEs), which are typically used to measure dissolved oxygen (DO) concentration in cellular respiration, have been developed since the 1980s. Arrays with individually addressable electrodes that constitute the sensor were used for various applications. However, the large number of leads and contact pads required for connecting the electrodes and the external instrument complicate the electrode layout and make the operation of integrated COE arrays challenging.

Is endometriosis due to evolutionary maladaptation?

Similar to diabetes and unlike many pathogen-induced diseases, endometriosis is likely a result of maladaptation to the evolutionary heritage of humans. The objective of this article is to review the literature and improve understanding of the evolutionary factors behind endometriosis, leading to more effective prevention and treatment approaches. In primates, spontaneous decidualization of the endometrium evolved to ensure optimal implantation of a limited number of early embryos, unlike many non-primates which depend on early embryos to induce decidualization and subsequent pregnancy.

A review of the development of histotripsy for extremity tumor ablation with a canine comparative oncology model to inform human treatments.

Cancer is a devasting disease resulting in millions of deaths worldwide in both humans and companion animals, including dogs. Treatment of cancer is complex and challenging and therefore often multifaceted, as in the case of osteosarcoma (OS) and soft tissue sarcoma (STS). OS predominantly involves the appendicular skeleton and STS commonly develops in the extremities, resulting in treatment challenges due to the need to balance wide-margin resections to achieve local oncological control against the functional outcomes for the patient.

Gonacin: A germ cell-derived hormone with glucogenic, orexigenic, and gonadal activities.

Fish require abundant nutrients to generate a large number of eggs for spawning. Based on the evolutionary conservation of human FBN2 and its C-terminal placensin-like sequences in fish, we identified a peptide hormone gonacin (GONAdal Cell placensIN) and found its high expression in early-stage germ cells in the ovary and testis of zebrafish. We demonstrated that gonacin is essential for food intake, glucose release, and ovarian development in zebrafish.

Histotripsy ablation for the treatment of feline injection site sarcomas: a first-in-cat feasibility study.

Purpose: Feline soft tissue sarcoma (STS) and injection site sarcoma (fISS) are rapidly growing tumors with low metastatic potential, but locally aggressive behavior. Histotripsy is a non-invasive focused ultrasound therapy using controlled acoustic cavitation to mechanically disintegrate tissue. In this study, we investigated the safety and feasibility of histotripsy to treat fISS using a custom 1 MHz transducer.
