Article Synopsis
  • - This study investigated the effects of neoadjuvant therapy combined with surgery on the health-related quality of life in patients with gastroesophageal cancer compared to surgery alone.
  • - Researchers analyzed data from 361 patients, finding that those receiving neoadjuvant therapy experienced fewer difficulties with eating, pain, and sleep issues than those treated with surgery only.
  • - The results suggest that neoadjuvant therapy significantly improves quality of life by reducing symptoms related to malnutrition, indicating it may be a beneficial option for more patients with gastroesophageal cancer.

Background: Isolated limb perfusion (ILP) is a regional surgical treatment for localized metastatic disease. High doses of chemotherapeutic agents are administered within an extracorporeal circulated isolated extremity, treating the metastasis, while systemic toxicity is avoided. To our knowledge, indexed oxygen supply/demand relationship during ILP has not previously been described.

Objectives: Patients with endocarditis requiring urgent valvular surgery with cardiopulmonary bypass are at a high risk of developing systemic inflammatory response syndrome and septic shock, necessitating intensive use of vasopressors after surgery. The use of a cytokine hemoadsorber (CytoSorb, CytoSorbents Europe GmbH, Germany) during cardiac surgery has been suggested to reduce the risk of inflammatory activation. The study authors hypothesized that adding a cytokine adsorber would reduce cytokine burden, which would translate into improved hemodynamic stability.

Aims: The aims of this study were to construct a small-area index of multiple deprivation (IMD) from single deprivation indicators (SDIs) and to compare the explanatory power of the IMD and SDIs with regard to mortality. We considered a small-area division of Sweden consisting of 5985 DeSO (), each with a population size between 653 and 4243 at the end of 2018.

Methods: Four SDIs were provided by open-source data: (a) the proportion of inhabitants with a low economic standard; (b) the proportion of inhabitants aged 25-64 years with ⩽12 years of schooling; (c) the proportion of inhabitants aged 16-64 years who were not in paid employment; and (d) the proportion of inhabitants who lived in a rented apartment/house.
