Background: Differential diagnosis between post-neurosurgical bacterial meningitis (PNBM) and aseptic meningitis is difficult. Inflammatory and biochemical cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) changes mimic those classically observed after CNS surgery. CSF lactate assay has therefore been proposed as a useful PNBM marker.
