Language outcomes of children with hearing loss remain heterogeneous despite recent advances in treatment and intervention. Consonants with high frequency, in particular, continue to pose challenges to affected children's speech perception and production. In this review, the authors evaluate findings of how enriched child-directed speech and song might function as a form of early family-centered intervention to remedy the effects of hearing loss on consonant acquisition already during infancy.

The indications for cochlear implants in children were gradually expended during the last 30 years. This concerns both the age at implantation and the audiological criteria, unilateral or bilateral treatment, the treatment of unilateral deafness and of children with multiple disabilities. Due to the improvement in hearing preservation and new technical developments, it is to be expected that the indication limits will continue to shift in the coming decades.

However, its acceptance might improve with specific defined parameters for indication and proper design of the velar extension. We present our 13-year, single-center experience in treating infants with RS using PEBP, focusing on the description and insertion of an endoscopically guided PEBP design along with its complications and limitations.
