Introduction The inpatient postoperative outcomes of patients with colostomies following primary total knee arthroplasty (TKA) have not been well studied in the literature. The purpose of this study was to analyze how colostomy impacts the immediate postoperative outcomes of TKA. Our null hypothesis is that after correcting for common variables, a colostomy does not predispose patients undergoing TKA to surgical site infections (SSIs) and periprosthetic infections.

Background: Maintaining balanced blood product ratios during damage control resuscitation (DCR) is independently associated with improved survival. We hypothesized that real-time performance improvement (RT-PI) would increase adherence to DCR best practice.

Study Design And Methods: From December 2020-August 2021, we prospectively used a bedside RT-PI tool to guide DCR in severely injured patients surviving at least 30 min.

Article Synopsis
  • - Early dislocation after total hip arthroplasty (THA) is uncommon but can lead to significant complications and increased healthcare costs; the study aimed to identify patient traits linked to higher dislocation rates.
  • - Researchers examined data from over 367,000 THA patients between 2016 and 2019, finding that those who dislocated were typically older, more likely to be female, and had specific conditions like SLE and Parkinson's disease.
  • - Patients with early dislocations experienced longer hospital stays (4.7 days) and higher costs (about $101,517) compared to those without dislocations, who stayed 2.3 days and incurred costs of about $66,388.

Background: Oculoauriculovertebral Spectrum (OAVS) encompasses abnormalities on derivatives from the first and second pharyngeal arches including macrostomia, hemifacial microsomia, micrognathia, preauricular tags, ocular and vertebral anomalies. We present genetic findings on a three-generation family affected with macrostomia, preauricular tags and uni- or bilateral ptosis following an autosomal dominant pattern.

Methods: We generated whole genome sequencing data for the proband, affected parent and unaffected paternal grandparent followed by Sanger sequencing on 23 family members for the top 10 candidate genes: and We performed parent and sibling-based transmission disequilibrium tests and burden analysis via a penalized linear mixed model, for segregation and mutation burden respectively.

Objectives: The extent and timing of surgery in severely injured patients remains an unsolved problem in orthopaedic trauma. Different laboratory values or scores have been used to try to predict mortality and estimate physiological reserve. The Parkland Trauma Index of Mortality (PTIM) has been validated as an electronic medical record-integrated algorithm to help with operative timing in trauma patients.
