Article Synopsis
  • Reinforcement learning (RL) has potential in intensive care medicine due to the wealth of data and real-time decision-making needs, but trust and safety issues hinder its implementation for clinical support, particularly in optimizing ventilator settings for COVID-19 patients.
  • A novel method called cross off-policy evaluation (OPE) was developed to evaluate RL models, using a large dataset from Dutch ICUs and focusing on ventilator settings, with interim and final rewards based on gas exchange indices and patient outcomes.
  • The study found that while many RL policies performed well initially, almost half were deemed suboptimal under more rigorous evaluation, highlighting the importance of detailed clinical policy inspection and restrictions to ensure safety in patient care.

The present study aimed to evaluate the in vitro antibacterial and antioxidant activities and the in vivo wound healing performance of a polysaccharide isolated from Glycyrrhiza glabra named PSG. It was structurally characterized by Fourier transformed infrared (FT-IR) spectroscopy, which confirmed the presence of different polysaccharides functional bands. The antioxidant capacity of PSG was determined in vitro and evaluated in vivo through the examination of wound healing capacity.

Coronaviruses can cause multiple systemic infections respiratory complications are the most recognizable symptoms similar to severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus (SARS-CoV). Aspiration pneumonia was the most common reason for the Emergency admission of patients with PD.Here we report the case a patient with Parkinson's disease admitted for respiratory insufficiency secondary to Covid-19 and aspiration pneumonia.

Since the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic, several small cohorts have reported the recurrent occurrence of venous thromboembolic disease (VTE), particulary pulmonary embolism, in serious patients hospitalized in intensive care units. We report the case of a patient who presented a minor COVID-19 infection treated on an outpatient basis with good clinical resolution. She developed a pulmonary embolism three weeks after the onset of symptoms.
