Efficacy of electrolyzed water and an acidic formulation compared with regularly used chemical sanitizers for tableware sanitization during mechanical and manual ware-washing protocols.

This study investigated residual bacteria and different food types left on tableware items after various washing and sanitization protocols. Escherichia coli K-12 and Staphylococcus epidermidis were inoculated into whole milk and soft cream cheese. The milk was used to contaminate regular drinking glasses and the cheese was used to contaminate plates and silverware.

Testing aspheric surfaces: simple method with a circular stop.

As an extension of the knife-edge test, a noninterferometric method for inspecting circularly symmetric aspheres is proposed in which the test surface is illuminated by a spherical wave. When a small circular stop is placed around the curvature center of the best-fitting sphere, only rays characteristic for the deviation from a perfect sphere remain unobstructed. An image of the tested surface is thereby obtained, showing light and dark regions whose boundaries are correlated to the surface profile, the stop size, and the stop position along the symmetry axis.

Solar eclipse observation: some simple devices.

The terrestrial solar irradiance is evaluated in view of the energy absorbed by the retina and the blue light hazard. The evaluated irradiance is compared with the known safety standard, to determine the safety requirement of solar eclipse observation devices. Simple devices are then proposed.
