Article Synopsis
  • Pre-clinical studies on traumatic brain injury (TBI) typically use anesthetics for animal welfare, but this raises concerns about how anesthetics may affect the results when translating findings to humans who experience TBI without anesthetics.
  • Researchers used a fruit fly model to study the impact of different anesthetics, discovering that isoflurane and sevoflurane reduced mortality after TBI, while ether did not demonstrate this protective effect.
  • Genetic analysis showed significant variation in response to anesthetic preconditioning among different fly lines, suggesting genetic factors play a role, and identified specific genes linked to the protective effects of isoflurane and sevoflurane, thus highlighting the importance of considering dose and genetics in T

Dishonest behaviours such as tax evasion impose significant societal costs. Ex ante honesty oaths-commitments to honesty before action-have been proposed as interventions to counteract dishonest behaviour, but the heterogeneity in findings across operationalizations calls their effectiveness into question. We tested 21 honesty oaths (including a baseline oath)-proposed, evaluated and selected by 44 expert researchers-and a no-oath condition in a megastudy involving 21,506 UK and US participants from Prolific.

From early on, infants show a preference for infant-directed speech (IDS) over adult-directed speech (ADS), and exposure to IDS has been correlated with language outcome measures such as vocabulary. The present multi-laboratory study explores this issue by investigating whether there is a link between early preference for IDS and later vocabulary size. Infants' preference for IDS was tested as part of the ManyBabies 1 project, and follow-up CDI data were collected from a subsample of this dataset at 18 and 24 months.

Instability of the anatomic total shoulder arthroplasty is a challenging problem. With an incidence of 1% to 5% reported in the literature, it is critical for shoulder surgeons to understand and be capable of addressing this complication. Etiology is multifactorial and related to soft-tissue imbalance, osseous pathology, implant malposition, or more commonly, a combination of these various causes.

Background: The effect of prior rotator cuff repair (RCR) on clinical outcomes after total shoulder arthroplasty (TSA) is unclear.

Purpose: To systematically review the literature to compare the outcomes of TSA in patients with and without prior RCR.

Study Design: Systematic review; Level of evidence, 4.
