Ultraviolet Photodissociation and Activated Electron Photodetachment Mass Spectrometry for Top-Down Sequencing of Modified Oligoribonucleotides.

With the increased development of new RNA-based therapeutics, the need for robust analytical methods for confirming sequences and mapping modifications has accelerated. Characterizing modified ribonucleic acids using mass spectrometry is challenging because diagnostic fragmentation may be suppressed for modified nucleotides, thus hampering complete sequence coverage and the confident localization of modifications. Ultraviolet photodissociation (UVPD) has shown great potential for the characterization of nucleic acids due to extensive backbone fragmentation.

Peak Filtering, Peak Annotation, and Wildcard Search for Glycoproteomics.

Glycopeptides in peptide or digested protein samples pose a number of analytical and bioinformatics challenges beyond those posed by unmodified peptides or peptides with smaller posttranslational modifications. Exact structural elucidation of glycans is generally beyond the capability of a single mass spectrometry experiment, so a reasonable level of identification for tandem mass spectrometry, taken by several glycopeptide software tools, is that of peptide sequence and glycan composition, meaning the number of monosaccharides of each distinct mass, e.g.

[The scaphoid fracture : Between pseudoarthrosis and possible anatomical variance].

The diagnosis of a scaphoid fracture, especially in the differentiation of a fresh fracture, the nonunion or a possible anatomical norm variant, can be difficult. We report on two patients who presented with stress-related, radiocarpal pain in our department. In both cases, radiological abnormalities were observed in the scaphoideal area, with a scaphoideum bipartitum on both sides, as well as an approximately 25-year-old scaphoid pseudarthrosis.

Corynebacterium propinquum associated with acute, nongonococcal urethritis.

Corynebacterium propinquum is usually considered part of the normal human oropharyngeal flora and is rarely responsible for clinical infection. We report here what seems to be the first case of acute purulent urethral discharge in a young Iranian man with urethritis acquired after orogenital contact. Attention should be devoted to less common nondiphtheriae Corynebacterium species for differential diagnosis.

Bilateral conjunctivitis due to Trichomonas vaginalis without genital infection: an unusual presentation in an adult man.

We report an unusual case of extragenital infection with Trichomonas vaginalis of the conjunctiva of a 32-year-old man. Only one other similar case has been reported in the English language literature. The present report reinforces the widening pathologic spectrum of trichomonads in humans, especially in the context of emerging extragenital infections.
