Pigs without intestinal receptors for F4 fimbriae are congenitally resistant to F4 fimbriae-bearing enterotoxigenic Escherichia coli (ETEC F4). In general, 50 % and 100 % of piglets born to resistant (RR) sows crossed with hetero- or homozygous susceptible (SR, SS) boars, respectively, are susceptible but do not receive colostral antibodies against F4 fimbriae unless the sows have been vaccinated. The question arises as to whether resistant sows produce protective amounts of F4 antifimbrial antibodies after vaccination.

In this case report multiparametric and multimodality MR imaging characteristics of a pyogenic brain abscess caused by Nocardia Farcinica are discussed with a specific focus on amide proton transfer weighted imaging as a modern non-invasive, molecular MR imaging method which detects endogenous mobile protein and peptide concentration and tissue pH changes in pathologic brain lesions. The imaging characteristics are reviewed and discussed in respect to possible differential diagnoses, especially malignant tumorous lesions.

The potential for replacing chemical and mechanical bone properties by dual energy X-ray absorptiometry (DXA) measures on non-dissected feet was also verified. Three Ca to dP ratios (2.

Background: Calf disbudding is a welfare-relevant invasive husbandry procedure. While it is widely recognized that disbudding elicits acute pain, its chronic consequences are currently unknown.
Objectives: Primary aim of this study was to investigate whether disbudding leads to chronic pain in calves; secondary aim was to evaluate the influence of age at disbudding (1 week versus 4 weeks).

The effects of the recommended dose of 200 mg iron and of half that dose injected on the first day of life on health, iron status and performance during the 4 week suckling period were studied in 2'123 piglets. All piglets received creep feed and soil which was supplemented with 14 g iron per kg. Neither mortality nor the prevalence of arthritis, meningitis and foot abscess (each disease affecting about 1% of the piglets) differed between the two groups.
