We have presented the circumstances of creation of The University Department of Orthopaedics and Traumatology of Szczecin, the first orthopaedic center in history of the West Pomerania Region. It has been explained why the University Department and other orthopaedic wards had been set up in 1967 and the reasons why they started working so late. The article presents the person of professor Tomasz Zuk, as well as his and all the orthopaedic team greatest achivements between 1966 and 2006.

We have presented a patient's case with advanced form of chondrosarcoma in the scapula causing enormous deformity of shoulder girdle and additionally presenting with metastases in both lungs. Monstrous extent of deformity was developed due to patient's disagreement with proposed therapy which lasted over two years. We wish to present the adaptation ability allowing the patient to perform active form of life and run business in spite of the huge deformity of the shoulder.

Anyone who is familiar with the pathomechanism of hangman's fractures will surely think twice before considering this type of injury to be relatively safe, on the grounds that a fracture of the C2 arches creates the conditions for decompressing the spinal cord, while the fact that the entire posterior complex is maintaining the ligament connection means that the fracture is relatively stable. Doe to the complexity of the pathomechanism involved in fractures, it is difficult to set the displacement non-surgically, and it may be dangerous to do so in the event of uncontrolled spine distraction. This article describes the surgical solution used to treat patient with a hangman's fracture using the anterior and posterior approaches simultaneously.
