Article Synopsis
  • Climate change is affecting mountain ecosystems by reducing winter snow cover, causing earlier spring snowmelt, and leading to shrub expansion in alpine areas.
  • Research shows that changes in snow conditions impact soil microbial communities and function, with these effects lasting into summer.
  • The expansion of ericaceous shrubs alters these impacts, enhancing certain soil microbes while reducing soil respiration and nitrogen availability, indicating that vegetation shifts can influence soil responses to climate change in alpine regions.

Convergence-accommodation, one of several cross-linkages in the oculomotor system is manifested by opening the accommodative feedback loop and increasing the vergence input. We elicited this response in human infants aged 3-6 months by placing a 15 delta prism (base-out) before one eye while they viewed a diffuse patch of light. Accommodation was measured and ocular alignment was confirmed with a video photorefractor.

Percent diastole (%D) was evaluated at rest and during effort (submaximal upright exercise) in 13 normal subjects and in 14 age-matched patients with coronary artery disease (CAD). Systolic time intervals were also simultaneously recorded by using the thermistor pulse transducer. At rest, in both groups, a positive linear regression was found between %D and cycle length (RR) (%D = 19.
