Single-cell analyses can reveal that despite experiencing identical physico-chemical conditions, individual bacterial cells within a monoclonal population may exhibit variations in gene expression. Such phenotypic heterogeneity has been described for several aspects of bacterial physiology, including QS activation. This study demonstrates that the transition of non-quorate cells to the quorate state is a graded process that does not occur at a specific cell density and that subpopulations of non-quorate cells also persist at high cell density.

Recovery from Food Waste-Biscuit Doughs Enriched with Pomegranate Peel Powder as a Model of Fortified Aliment.

The aim of the present work is the characterization of biscuit doughs enriched with pomegranate peel powder (PPP) at 3 (PPP3) and 5 (PPP5) wt% in the prospect of developing a fortified aliment as a support of the therapy of chronic inflammatory diseases of the intestinal tract. The total phenolic content of the powder was preliminarily evaluated. Then, the main compounds present in the PPP were identified by HPLC-ESI-TOF-MS analysis, being mainly hydrolysable tannins.

Anchorage onto deciduous teeth: effectiveness of early rapid maxillary expansion in increasing dental arch dimension and improving anterior crowding.

Background: Anchorage onto permanent dentition is a common procedure in rapid maxillary expansion. However, replacing first permanent molars with the second deciduous molars seems to be an option to reduce some negative side effects during orthodontic treatment. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the dental effect of rapid maxillary expansion with anchorage exclusively onto deciduous teeth performed in the first period of transition.

Colon cancer adrenal metastasis: case report and review of the literature.

The authors report a case of alone right adrenal metastasis from colon carcinoma discovered incidentally by CT scan imaging 4 years after colon resection in a 74-year-old man. The presence of metastasis in the adrenal glands represents the second most frequent cause of "adrenal incidentaloma", following cortical-adrenal adenomas. The most common primary tumors responsible for adrenal metastasis are carcinoma of the lung, breast and kidney.
