Article Synopsis
  • Outpatient parenteral antimicrobial therapy (OPAT) can effectively treat fungal infections while reducing the treatment burden and costs, particularly by using the longer dosing intervals of rezafungin.
  • A study of 386 patients from 2012 to 2022 found that 11% were treated with echinocandins via OPAT, primarily for Candida infections, achieving a 73% treatment success rate.
  • Switching from daily to weekly echinocandin dosing could potentially cut treatment sessions by 52%, although the ongoing need for daily antibiotics limited some of these benefits.

The genus contains many members currently being investigated for applications in biodegradation, biopesticides, biocontrol, and synthetic biology. Though several strains have been identified with beneficial properties, chromosomal manipulations to further improve these strains for commercial applications have been limited due to the lack of efficient genetic tools that have been tested across this genus. Here, we test the recombineering efficiencies of five phage-derived recombinases across three biotechnologically relevant strains: KT2440, Pf-5, and CHA0.

Background: The Combination Antibiotic Therapy for Methicillin-Resistant (CAMERA2) trial ceased recruitment in July 2018, noting that a higher proportion of patients in the intervention arm (combination therapy) developed acute kidney injury (AKI) compared to the standard therapy (monotherapy) arm. We analyzed the long-term outcomes of participants in CAMERA2 to understand the impact of combination antibiotic therapy and AKI.

Methods: Trial sites obtained additional follow-up data.

The microbiota-the mixture of microorganisms in the intestinal tract of animals-plays an important role in host biology. Bacteriophages are a prominent, though often overlooked, component of the microbiota. The mechanisms that phage use to infect susceptible cells associated with animal hosts, and the broader role they could play in determining the substituents of the microbiota, are poorly understood.
