IJV thrombophlebitis: be wary of the occult.

A 43-year-old woman was referred to the Ear, Nose and Throat Department with a 3-day history of left-sided neck pain and swelling associated with fevers and night sweats. She also reported a cough, oral thrush and a dental extraction more than a month previously. A CT scan of the neck with contrast revealed left internal jugular vein (IJV) thrombophlebitis and the patient was initially managed for suspected Lemierre's syndrome.

Gallstone ileus with an enterovaginal fistula: a rare complication of pelvic radiotherapy.

Gallstone ileus is a rare cause of small bowel obstruction. Chronic gallstone irritation can lead to the formation of a cholecystoduodenal fistula, with gallstone impaction typically in the terminal ileum. Rarely gallstones can become impacted in other structures such as the colon or can even erode through the bowel.

Background: Addressing bone loss in revision TKA is challenging despite the array of options to reconstruct the deficient bone. Biologic reconstruction using morselized loosely-packed bone graft potentially allows for augmentation of residual bone stock while offering physiologic load transfer. However it is unclear whether the reconstructions are durable.

Open access to MRI for general practitioners: 12 years' experience at one institution -- a retrospective analysis.

The aim of this study was to evaluate 12 years of general practitioner (GP) use of open access MRI services at a single London teaching hospital. A retrospective analysis of reports from all GP requests for MRI scans between 1994 and 2005 was performed. The date, scanned body part, and requester details from 1798 scans requested by 209 individual GPs over a continuous 12-year period were recorded.

Laser ablation of hepatocellular carcinoma--a review.

A wide range of local thermal ablative therapies have been developed in the treatment of non resectable hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) in the last decade. Laser ablation (LA) and radiofrequency ablation (RFA) are the two most widely used of these. This article provides an up to date overview of the role of laser ablation in the local treatment of HCC.
