Article Synopsis
  • Kitchen equipment and processes can significantly contribute to microplastic contamination on our plates, beyond just food and packaging sources.
  • This review examines how various utensils and cooking methods may release microplastics during food preparation, addressing a knowledge gap in existing research.
  • The findings raise important concerns about food safety and potential health risks associated with microplastic exposure from everyday kitchen activities.

Microplastics (MPs), discovered in oceans, lakes, and rivers, can infiltrate the food chain through ingestion by organisms, potentially posing health risks. Our research is the first to study the composition and distribution of MPs in Bosten Lake's sediment. In May, the average abundance of MPs was 0.

Matrix interference and recovery when using pyrolysis gas chromatography (Py-GC-MS) to analyze wastewater for polystyrene (PS) and polypropylene (PP) microplastics (MP) was studied. Raw wastewater underwent a sample preparation train commonly applied for such matrix. The train consisted of six discrete steps to reduce the organic matter content without affecting MP in the sample.

Microplastics are a prolific environmental contaminant that have been evidenced in human tissues. Human uptake of microplastic occurs via inhalation of airborne fibres and ingestion of microplastic-contaminated foods and beverages. Plastic and PTFE-coated cookware and food contact materials may release micro- and nanoplastics into food during food preparation.

The production and consumption of plastic products had been steadily increasing over the years, leading to more plastic waste entering the environment. Plastic pollution is ubiquitous and comes in many types and forms. To enhance or modify their properties, chemical additives are added to plastic items during manufacturing.
