Article Synopsis
  • - An outbreak of bloodstream infections affected 20 haemodialysis patients in four hospitals in north-eastern Italy, linked to a contaminated batch of urokinase vials imported from India.
  • - Whole genome sequencing showed a strong relationship between the strains found in patients and the contaminated urokinase, with an attack rate of 34% among treated patients.
  • - The outbreak was successfully terminated by discontinuing the use of the contaminated urokinase product.

Additive manufacturing processes induce a high orientation in the microstructure of the printed part due to the strong thermal gradients developed during the process caused by the highly concentrated heat source that is used to melt the metal powder layer-by-layer. The resulting microstructural anisotropy may have an effect on the post-processing operations such as machining ones. This paper investigates the influence of the anisotropy in turning operations carried out on laser powder bed fused Ti6Al4V parts manufactured with different scanning strategies.

Electrically-Assisted Forming (EAF) techniques are interesting and promising for the automotive industry. Electrically-assisted tensile tests were carried out on specimens of AA7075 aluminum alloy in different states of hardening, namely T6 (the as-received state) and the supersaturated solid solution state. All the tests were carried out in quasi-static conditions under the application of direct electric current (DC) in the range of 90 to 540 A.

Magnesium and its alloys have recently attracted great attention as potential materials for the manufacture of biodegradable implants. Unfortunately, their inadequate resistance to the simultaneous action of corrosion and mechanical stresses in the human body have hampered their use as implant materials. This work aims at evaluating the Stress Corrosion Cracking (SCC) susceptibility of the AZ31 Mg alloy after being machined under cryogenic cooling.
