Versatility of the medial corticoperiosteal flap: from recalcitrant non-unions up to large bony defects.

Background: Reconstructive microsurgery techniques using vascularized bone grafts have revolutionized the treatment of complex cases associated with recalcitrant non-unions or osteomyelitis. The medial femoral corticoperiosteal flap (MFCP flap) has emerged as a valuable option in bone reconstruction. Its clinical applications have been extended over the years considering this flap from non-unions with minimal bone lost, up to large intercalary defects of the upper and lower extremities.

An Alternative Thumb Reconstruction by Double Microsurgical Transfer From the Great and Second Toe for a Carpometacarpal Amputation.

Thumb amputation at the carpometacarpal level is very incapacitating. Pollicization may be considered. We describe an alternate technique for thumb reconstruction at the level of the metacarpal base using a trimmed great toe along with a vascularized second metatarsophalangeal joint, including the second metatarsal, all supplied on a single vascular pedicle.

Results of surgical treatment of acromioclavicular dislocations type III using modified Weaver Dunn technique.

Objective: To evaluate the clinical and radiological results of the surgical treatment of type III acromioclavicular dislocations using the Weaver-Dunn technique in the delayed phase.

Material And Method: A non-randomised controlled retrospective observational study of 38 patients operated between January 2006 and December 2014. We excluded 10 patients due to death or non-localisation.

Surgical considerations about amyloid goiter.

Amyloidosis is an uncommon syndrome consisting of a number of disorders having in common an extracellular deposit of fibrillary proteins. This results in functional and structural changes in the affected organs, depending on deposit location and severity. Amyloid infiltration of the thyroid gland may occur in 50% and up to 80% of patients with primary and secondary amyloidosis respectively.

Sentinel lymph node biopsy in selected cases of ductal carcinoma in situ.

Introduction: Axillary lymphadenectomy is nowadays not recommended to treat ductal carcinoma in situ (DCIS), but there is controversy surrounding the indication for sentinel lymph node biopsy (SLNB).

Materials And Methods: A prospective study of a selected group of patients diagnosed preoperatively with DCIS was performed between 2004 and 2009. Indications for SLNB were histologically determined high-grade tumours, tumour size >2 cm and patients scheduled to undergo a mastectomy.
