Evidence of the validity of the Multidimensional Scale of Perceived Social Support (MSPSS) in university students.

Social support refers to the social resources that a person perceives to be available and has been strongly associated with physical and mental health outcomes. The present study aimed to evaluate the internal consistency, construct validity, and test-retest reliability of the Perceived Social Support Multidimensional Scale (PSSMS) in university students in the Midwest of Brazil. Exploratory and confirmatory factor analyses were performed with two independent random samples, both consisting of 1,147 students.

In vivo susceptibility to energy failure parkinsonism and LRRK2 kinase activity.

The G2019S mutation of LRRK2 represents a risk factor for idiopathic Parkinson's disease. Here, we investigate whether LRRK2 kinase activity regulates susceptibility to the environmental toxin 1-methyl-4-phenyl-1,2,5,6-tetrahydropyridine (MPTP). G2019S knock-in mice (bearing enhanced kinase activity) showed greater nigro-striatal degeneration compared to LRRK2 knock-out, LRRK2 kinase-dead and wild-type mice following subacute MPTP treatment.

Regulator of G-Protein Signalling 4 (RGS4) negatively modulates nociceptin/orphanin FQ opioid receptor signalling: Implication for l-Dopa-induced dyskinesia.

Background And Purpose: Regulator of G-protein signalling 4 (RGS4) is a signal transduction protein that accelerates intrinsic GTPase activity of Gα and Gα subunits, suppressing GPCR signalling. Here, we investigate whether RGS4 modulates nociceptin/orphanin FQ (N/OFQ) opioid (NOP) receptor signalling and if this modulation has relevance for l-Dopa-induced dyskinesia.

Experimental Approach: HEK293T cells transfected with NOP, NOP/RGS4 or NOP/RGS19 were challenged with N/OFQ and the small-molecule NOP agonist AT-403, using D1-stimulated cAMP levels as a readout.

Total hip arthroplasty for osteonecrosis of the femoral head in sickle cell disease: a case series from our African experience.

Sickle cell disease causes osteonecrosis (20% to 50% of patients) and collapse of the femoral head that result in secondary osteoarthritis. Total hip arthroplasty (THA) is a valid alternative for these patients. We define the difficulties that can be encountered when undertaking THA in sickle cell disease patients and give advice on how to deal with these technically demanding procedures.

Because of migratory flows, these diseases will always have an increasing prevalence even in those countries that do not usually present these types of cases. Extra-pulmonary tuberculosis often affects the musculoskeletal system.
