We analyze parametric χ processes in equidistant finite-size arrays of thin-film lithium niobate waveguides, where the fundamental harmonic (FH) field supports topological edge states due to the specific interplay between inter- and intra-modal couplings of two families of guided modes, while the second-harmonic (SH) field only supports bulk modes. Regimes of topological parametric gain are identified, where the gain only occurs in the edge states of the FH field, regardless of the spatial distribution of the pump SH field. The topological gain of the FH component generally triggers localization of the SH field near an edge of the array in the optical parametric oscillation dynamics.

Brain swelling is associated with death from cerebral malaria, but it is unclear whether brain swelling is caused by cerebral edema or vascular congestion-two pathological conditions with distinct effects on tissue hemoglobin concentrations. We used near-infrared spectroscopy (NIRS) to noninvasively study cerebral microvascular hemoglobin concentrations in 46 Malawian children with cerebral malaria. Cerebral malaria was defined by the presence of the malaria parasite on a blood smear, a Blantyre coma score of 2 or less, and retinopathy.

We report that equidistant 1D arrays of thin-film lithium niobate nano-waveguides generically support topological edge states. Unlike conventional coupled-waveguide topological systems, the topological properties of these arrays are dictated by the interplay between intra- and inter-modal couplings of two families of guided modes with different parities. Exploiting two modes within the same waveguide to design a topological invariant allows us to decrease the system size by a factor of two and substantially simplify the structure.

The review summarizes recent progress in studying the expression of genes involved in p53 pathway regulation in neuroblastoma. Several markers associated with recurrence risk and poor outcome are considered.

Idiopathic inflammatory myopathies (IIM) are characterized by muscle inflammation and weakness, myositis-specific autoantibodies (MSAs), and extramuscular organ damage. The role of neutrophil dysregulation and neutrophil extracellular traps (NETs) in IIM is unclear. We assessed whether pathogenic neutrophil subsets (low-density granulocytes [LDGs]) and NETs were elevated in IIM, associated with clinical presentation and MSAs, and their effect on skeletal myoblasts and myotubes.
