Free-living nematodes of Mediterranean ports: A mandatory contribution for their use in ecological quality assessment.

Free-living nematodes were investigated in three Mediterranean commercial ports (Ancona and Trieste, Italy; Koper, Slovenia) in terms of abundance, diversity and functionality. Results indicated that r-strategist genera were dominant in all ports and that a more diverse assemblage characterized Trieste, despite the high contamination levels, suggesting a potential adaptation to long-standing contamination. The main environmental factor that shaped the assemblage in all ports were Total Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons, while Total Organic Carbon and the grain-size were less relevant.

Coverage of HPV vaccination programme in Friuli Venezia Giulia Region (Northern Italy).

[Early effects of attendance to the Friuli Venezia Giulia (Northern Italy) mammography screening programme on the incidence of advanced-stage breast cancer: a cohort study].

Design: retrospective cohort study. Women invited to the first screening round (2006-2007) were identified from the database of the programme.

Prokaryotic Response to Phytodetritus-Derived Organic Material in Epi- and Mesopelagic Antarctic Waters.

Particulate organic matter (POM) export represents the underlying principle of the biological carbon pump, driving the carbon flux from the sunlit to the dark ocean. The efficiency of this process is tightly linked to the prokaryotic community, as >70% of POM respiration is carried out by particle-associated prokaryotes. In the Ross Sea, one of the most productive areas of the Southern Ocean, up to 50% of the surface primary production is exported to the mesopelagic ocean as POM.

Reasons for non-participation in public oncological screening programs in the Italian region Friuli Venezia Giulia.

Objectives: In the Italian region Friuli Venezia Giulia, public screening is offered for cervical cancer, breast cancer, and colorectal cancer. Participation of the target population is lower than 70%. Our aim was to investigate reasons for non-participation.
