Article Synopsis
  • Glaucoma is a progressive eye condition linked to mitochondrial dysfunction that causes damage to retinal ganglion cells, and this review aims to explore the effect of daily niacin intake on this disease.
  • Five relevant studies were analyzed, revealing that individuals with higher niacin consumption were less likely to have glaucoma compared to those with lower intake, suggesting a possible protective effect of niacin.
  • However, due to variations in niacin intake, glaucoma definitions, and other influencing factors, further large-scale, controlled trials are necessary to definitively establish the benefits of niacin for glaucoma patients.

Background: Pediatric patients undergoing transabdominal pelvic ultrasound require a full bladder as an acoustic window. Patients are typically relied upon to subjectively identify bladder fullness, but inaccurate reporting often leads to delays in test results, diagnosis, and treatment.

Objectives: Our aim was to objectively evaluate bladder fullness by comparing the height of the bladder to the height of the uterus on point-of-care ultrasound (POCUS).

The objectives of the present study were to analyze the possibility of using pattern VEPs (VEP of pattern type) in glaucoma patients and their role in the follow-up and coordination/ management of anti-glaucoma treatment. This is a prospective study on 54 eyes of 30 consecutive glaucoma patients, whose compliance capacity did not allow automatic perimetry and OCT scan to be carried out. The patients were divided into two groups: group A - the study group and group B - the control group.

Article Synopsis
  • Visual evoked potentials (VEP) serve as an important diagnostic tool for assessing optic nerve function, providing objective measurements of visual responses.
  • Research indicates a strong correlation between VEP latency measurements and results from Humphrey static perimetry, highlighting the potential for these tests to identify abnormal cortical responses in glaucoma patients.
  • Additionally, changes observed in the ganglion cell layer and retinal fiber layer thickness via SD-OCT tests—known to occur before visual field defects—also correlate with VEP latency, reinforcing VEP's role in monitoring glaucoma progression.
