Exploring the benefits of inoculated cowpeas under different climatic conditions in Namibia.

Cowpeas (Vigna uniculata L. Walp) are grown by many smallholder farmers in sub-Saharan Africa for food and their ability to fix nitrogen even under stress. Their performance depends on the indigenous rhizobial strains that live in symbiotic association with the roots; it can be enhanced if the seeds are inoculated with more effective ones.

The use of 13C-labelled polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons for the analysis of their transformation in soil.

The formation of non-extractable residues during biodegradation and humification processes in soils and sediments represents a major sink for organic contaminants. The mode of incorporation of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAH) and their metabolites into macromolecular organic matter during microbial degradation was studied applying 13C-labelled compounds. Mineralisation rates were determined by measuring the 13CO2 production.

Two consecutive Papanicolaou smears were obtained in 3524 patients during a single clinic visit. The first smear consisted of a combined cervical scrape and vaginal pool sample (Fast smear) while the second smear contained only a cervical scrape. Of the 93 patients with abnormal cytology, 71 (76%) patients were identified by the first smear and 74 (80%) by the second smear.
