The last five years marked a surge in interest for and use of smart robots, which operate in dynamic and unstructured environments and might interact with humans. We posit that well-validated computer simulation can provide a virtual proving ground that in many cases is instrumental in understanding safely, faster, at lower costs, and more thoroughly how the robots of the future should be designed and controlled for safe operation and improved performance. Against this backdrop, we discuss how simulation can help in robotics, barriers that currently prevent its broad adoption, and potential steps that can eliminate some of these barriers.

Hoarding disorder (HD) is hypothesized to originate in childhood/adolescence but little is known about the presentation of hoarding symptoms in youth and their natural history. In this longitudinal study, we tracked and conducted in-depth psychiatric interviews with twins who participated in an epidemiological survey and screened positive on a measure of hoarding symptoms at age 15. Twins screening positive for clinically significant hoarding symptoms at age 15 (n = 42), their co-twins (n = 33), a group of screen negative twins (n = 49), and their parents underwent a clinical assessment a median of 3 years after the initial screening.

The peptide pVEC is a recently described cell-penetrating peptide, derived from the murine vascular endothelial-cadherin protein. In order to define which part of this 18-amino acid long peptide is important for the cellular translocation, we performed a structure-activity relationship study of pVEC. Together with the l-alanine substituted peptides, the retro-pVEC, D-pVEC and the scramble pVEC are studied for comparison.

Galanin is a highly inducible neuropeptide, showing distinct up-regulation after pathological disturbance within the nervous system. Significant increase in galanin expression is observed after peripheral nerve injury, in the basal forebrain in Alzheimer's disease (AD), during neuronal development, and after stimulation with estrogen, while seizure activity deplete galanin in the hippocampus. A wide distribution of galanin and its receptors is seen in the nervous system, often in co-localization with classical neurotransmitters and other neuromodulators.

Application of cell-penetrating peptides for delivering various hydrophilic macromolecules with biological function into cells has gained much attention in recent years. We compared the protein transduction efficiency of four cell-penetrating peptides: penetratin, Tat peptide, transportan, and pVEC and studied the effects of various medium parameters on the uptake. Depletion of cellular energy and lowering of temperature strongly impaired the internalization of protein complexed with cell-penetrating peptides, confirming the endocytotic mechanism of peptide-mediated protein cellular transduction.
