Long-term Changes in Pain, Depression, Function and Informal Caregiving after Major Elective Surgeries Among Seriously Ill Older Adults.

Objective: To compare differences in pain, depression, function, and informal caregiving pre-and-post major elective surgery among older adults with and without serious illness; and determine if serious illness was independently associated with increasing pain, depression, assistance in activities of daily living (ADLs) and informal caregiving post-surgery.

Background: The American College of Surgeons has endorsed the integration of palliative care (PC) into surgical care in adults with serious illness but targets for PC during surgical episodes such as pain, depression, function, and informal caregiving are understudied.

Methods: We used Health and Retirement Study-linked Medicare data (2008-2018) to identify older (≥66 y) adults with and without serious illness who had major elective surgery.

Evaluations of State Medical Cannabis Programs in the USA: A Narrative Review.

Background: Medical cannabis (MC) use is increasing across the USA, with functional MC programs now operating in 38 states. While program policies and practices vary widely, little is known about whether and how states evaluate their programs. Better characterization of state MC program evaluation to date could inform states, program officials, and providers about best practices and provide a roadmap for future program evaluation.

Controlling human stem cell-derived islet composition using magnetic sorting.

Stem cell-derived islets (SC-islets) consists of multiple hormone-producing cell types and offer a promising therapeutic avenue for treating type 1 diabetes (T1D). Currently, the composition of cell types generated within these SC-islets currently cannot be controlled via soluble factors during this differentiation process and consist of off-target cell types. In this study, we devised a magnetic-activated cell sorting (MACS) protocol to enrich SC-islets for CD49a, a marker associated with functional insulin-producing β cells.

Domestic violence in American Indian and Alaska Native populations: a new framework for policy change and addressing the structural determinants of health.

There are 574 federally recognized Tribes in the United States. Tribes have experienced increased rates of domestic violence (DV) due to structural determinants like gender violence, loss of control, discrimination, marginalization, oppression, and political violence. American Indian and Alaska Native girls and women experience the highest rates of DV and abuse in the US, yet policy change, funding, and advocacy has been slow to address high DV rates.

Ask Your Relative: A mixed method analysis of the Sexual Health and Healthy Relationship Q&As submitted by American Indian Alaska Native young adults.

Background: Disparities in sexual health outcomes persist among American Indian and Alaska Native (AIAN) youth due to intersectional challenges accessing youth-friendly health services. AIAN youth have an increased prevalence of STIs and teen pregnancy. To address disparities in sexual health outcomes, the Ask Auntie/Ask Your Relative (AYR) Q&A service has been used by AIAN youth and young adults for over seven years as a trusted resource for information on sensitive health topics.
