Out of the ice age: Preservation of cardiac allografts with a reusable 10 °C cooler.

Objective: Static cold storage with ice has been the mainstay of cardiac donor preservation. Early preclinical data suggest that allograft preservation at 10 °C may be beneficial. We tested this hypothesis by using a static 10 °C storage device to preserve and transport cardiac allografts.

Background: Worldwide growing shortages among health care staff are observed. This also holds true for medical assistants in Germany. Medical assistants mainly work in outpatient care and are the first point of contact for patients while performing clinical and administrative tasks.

Background: Emergency medical service (EMS) workers face challenging working conditions that are characterized by high stress and a susceptibility to making errors. The objectives of the present study were (a) to characterize the psychosocial working conditions of EMS workers, (b) to describe the perceived quality of patient care they provide and patient safety, and (c) to investigate for the first time among EMS workers associations of psychosocial working conditions with the quality of patient care and patient safety.

Methods: For this cross-sectional study, we carried out an online survey among 393 EMS workers who were members of a professional organization.

Gender disparities in patients undergoing extracorporeal cardiopulmonary resuscitation.

Introduction: The use of venoarterial extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (VA-ECMO) in extracorporeal cardiopulmonary resuscitation (eCPR) has emerged as a treatment option for selected patients who are experiencing refractory cardiac arrest (CA). In the light of increasing availability, the analyses of outcome-relevant predisposing characteristics are of growing importance. We evaluated the prognostic influence of gender in patients presenting with out-of-hospital cardiac arrest (OHCA) treated with eCPR.
