Provision of Air Conditioning and Heat-Related Mortality in Texas Prisons.

Importance: There is a large body of epidemiologic evidence that heat is associated with increased risk of mortality. One of the most effective strategies to mitigate the effects of heat is through air conditioning (AC); Texas regulates the internal temperature of jails to stay between 65 and 85 °F degrees, but these same standards do not apply to state and private prisons.

Objective: To analyze whether heat during warm months is associated with an increased risk of mortality in Texas prisons without AC.

A Critical Appraisal and Targeted Intervention of the Oncology Experience in an Internal Medicine Residency.

Most oncology education is provided to residents on an inpatient oncology service, with limited outpatient exposure. There exists considerable need to develop effective education strategies to teach resident physicians basic concepts in oncology. We created a 2-hour small-group interactive workshop, using interactive cases, followed by a number of questions regarding curability, survival, and possible treatment options.

Hippocampal and ventral medial prefrontal activation during retrieval-mediated learning supports novel inference.

Memory enables flexible use of past experience to inform new behaviors. Although leading theories hypothesize that this fundamental flexibility results from the formation of integrated memory networks relating multiple experiences, the neural mechanisms that support memory integration are not well understood. Here, we demonstrate that retrieval-mediated learning, whereby prior event details are reinstated during encoding of related experiences, supports participants' ability to infer relationships between distinct events that share content.

A mass mediated intervention on Hispanic live kidney donation.

This research examines the impact of a Spanish language mass media campaign on living organ donation attitudes and behavioral intentions among Spanish dominant Hispanics in Tucson, Arizona. Impact was assessed via a pretest/posttest control group quasiexperimental design with Tucson, Arizona, as the intervention community and Phoenix, Arizona, as the control. Preintervention focus groups provided qualitative data to guide intervention development, while telephone surveys in both communities provided quantitative data to assess campaign impact.
