Mathematical modelling for pandemic preparedness in Canada: Learning from COVID-19.

Background: The COVID-19 pandemic underlined the need for pandemic planning but also brought into focus the use of mathematical modelling to support public health decisions. The types of models needed (compartment, agent-based, importation) are described. Best practices regarding biological realism (including the need for multidisciplinary expert advisors to modellers), model complexity, consideration of uncertainty and communications to decision-makers and the public are outlined.

Mental Health Expenditure in Canada.

Background: Mental ill-health-illness or conditions related to mental health, including dementia, schizophrenia, mood (affective) disorders, and mental and behaviour disorders due to psychoactive substance and alcohol use - places a significant burden on society in terms of economic, health, and social costs. Focusing on direct health care costs, estimated expenditures on treating mental health conditions accounted for up to 14% of total health expenditures across 12 OECD countries over the period of 2003 to 2010.

Aims Of The Study: The purpose of this study was to estimate the direct health care costs associated with the treatment of mental ill-health in Canada for the year 2019 using currently available guidelines.

Pupylation-Based Proximity-Tagging of FERONIA-Interacting Proteins in Arabidopsis.

The plasma membrane-localized receptor kinase FERONIA (FER) plays critical roles in a remarkable variety of biological processes throughout the life cycle of Arabidopsis thaliana. Revealing the molecular connections of FER that underlie these processes starts with identifying the proteins that interact with FER. We applied pupylation-based interaction tagging (PUP-IT) to survey cellular proteins in proximity to FER, encompassing weak and transient interactions that can be difficult to capture for membrane proteins.

Sexually Transmitted Infection Prevention Services for Women Experiencing Homelessness: A Safety-Net Health System Quality Improvement Initiative.

Background: Consistent use of sexually transmitted infection (STI) prevention methods is proven to decrease transmission of STIs. However, rates continue to rise within the United States, particularly among high-risk populations. Women experiencing homelessness may face barriers to access reproductive health care.

Quantifying the economic gains associated with COVID-19 vaccination in the Canadian population: A cost-benefit analysis.

Background: Vaccination has been a key part of Canada's coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic response. Although the clinical benefits of vaccination are clear, an understanding of the population-level benefits of vaccination relative to the programmatic costs is of value. The objective of this article is to quantify the economic impact of COVID-19 vaccination in the Canadian population between December 2020 and March 2022.
