The oral mucosa is the interface between the host immune response and the oral microbiota. In periodontal disease, the microbial plaque elicits a tissue-destructive immune response. Removal of the microbial stimulus initiates active resolution of inflammatory.

Periodontal health is dependent on a symbiotic relationship of the host immune response with the oral microbiota. Pathologic shifts of the microbial plaque elicit an immune response that eventually leads to the recruitment and activation of osteoclasts and matrix metalloproteinases and the eventual tissue destruction that is evident in periodontal disease. Once the microbial stimulus is removed, an active process of inflammatory resolution begins.

CRK and CRKL encode cytoplasmic adaptors that contribute to the etiology of congenital heart disease. Neural crest cells (NCCs) are required for cardiac outflow tract (OFT) septation and aortic arch formation. The roles of Crk/Crkl in NCCs during mouse cardiovascular development remain unknown.

Article Synopsis
  • Schizophrenia affects about 25% of individuals with 22q11.2 deletion syndrome (22q11.2DS), prompting a study to explore genetic factors that heighten this risk beyond the deletion itself.
  • Researchers analyzed whole-genome sequencing data from 519 people with 22q11.2DS to compare genetic variants in those with schizophrenia to those without psychotic disorders, as well as assessing polygenic risk across broader populations.
  • The study found that individuals with 22q11.2DS and schizophrenia had significantly higher polygenic risk scores for schizophrenia, highlighting that both the genetic deletion and other common risk factors play a crucial role in the increased likelihood of developing schizophrenia.
