Reference equations of oxygen uptake for the step test in the obese population.

The aim of this study was to establish reference equations for the six-minute step test (6MST) based on demographic, anthropometric, body composition, and performance variables able to predict oxygen uptake (V̇O2) in obese individuals. Seventy-three obese adults (42±14 years old, body mass index >30 kg/m2) from both sexes were included. They underwent anamnesis, body composition evaluation, and the 6MST with expired gases registered simultaneously.

Massive GI hemorrhage from an ileal duplication cyst in an adult.

We describe an unusual case of a 32-yr-old man who presented with massive GI hemorrhage as an initial manifestation of an ileal duplication cyst. The lesion was first revealed by visceral angiography during investigation of the bleeding source. At laparotomy, a large ileal duplication containing full-thickness gastric-type mucosa was identified.

Case report: toxic shock syndrome arising from cellulitis.

Toxic shock syndrome is a febrile, multiorgan illness related to toxins elaborated by staphylococcal or streptococcal infections. In the 1980s, most cases were associated with menstruation. More recently, many cases now are unrelated to menses.

Antibody to hepatitis C is common among patients with alcoholic liver disease with and without risk factors.

Thirty-seven patients with clinically suspected alcoholic liver disease were retrospectively studied for the prevalence of antibody to hepatitis C virus (HCV) by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) and immunoblot assay. Twenty-four had biopsy-proven cirrhosis. Nineteen had identifiable risk factors for non-A, non-B viral hepatitis, and 18 did not.
