Objective: To investigate the differences in the brain responses of healthy controls (HC) and patients with disorders of consciousness (DOC) to familiar and non-familiar audiovisual stimuli and their consistency with the clinical progress.

Methods: EEG responses of 19 HC and 19 patients with DOC were recorded while watching emotionally-valenced familiar and non-familiar videos. Differential entropy of the EEG recordings was used to train machine learning models aimed to distinguish brain responses to stimuli type.

Objective: Severe brain injuries can result in disorders of consciousness, such as the Minimally Conscious State (MCS), where individuals display intermittent yet discernible signs of conscious awareness. The varied levels of responsiveness and awareness observed in this state have spurred the progressive delineation of two subgroups within MCS, termed "plus" (MCS+) and "minus" (MCS-). However, the clinical validity of these classifications remains uncertain.

Article Synopsis
  • The PIK3CA-related overgrowth spectrum (PROS) includes conditions caused by mosaic variants in the PIK3CA gene, which can also lead to various cancers, including an increased risk of Wilms tumor (WT).
  • A study of 267 PROS patients found a low overall cancer development rate of 2.2%, with an estimated 5.6% probability of cancer by age 45, suggesting the risk of WT in these patients is relatively low.
  • The findings indicate that routine abdominal ultrasound for cancer detection in PROS might not be necessary, and more long-term studies are needed to better understand the risks of different cancers and their connection to PIK3CA variants.

Scientific diasporas from developing countries represent an opportunity to strengthen international collaborations. These collaborations build upon the desire of members of the diasporas to establish scientific, academic, technological, and cultural exchange networks with the communities in their country of origin. While Mexico has a significant number of scientists residing abroad, particularly in North America, and most of them are committed to aid in the country's development, institutional coordination has not harnessed its benefits.
