Bariatric surgery has evolved and gained in popularity as it has been recognized as the most sustainable and effective treatment for obesity and related diseases. These related diseases are significant causes of obesity related morbidity and mortality. Most bariatric procedures incorporate some component of gastric restriction with or without intestinal bypass, but the full mechanism of these procedures has yet to be elucidated.

Background: Patients with acute cholecystitis (AC) presenting with unfavorable systemic or local conditions are often managed with percutaneous cholecystostomy (PC) as a temporary measure. The clinical outcomes of interval cholecystectomy following PC remain unclear. The aim of the study was to identify the association between the timing of cholecystectomy following PC for AC and perioperative complication rates at interval cholecystectomy.

Background: As the population ages, more older adults are presenting for surgery. Age-related declines in physiological reserve and functional capacity can result in frailty and poor outcomes after surgery. Hence, optimizing perioperative care in older patients is imperative.

Background: Diversity, equity, and inclusion have been an intentional focus for SAGES well before the COVID-19 pandemic and the coincident societal recognition of social injustices and racism. Longstanding inequities within our society, healthcare, and the surgery profession have come to light in the aftermath of events that rose to attention around the time of Covid. In so doing, they have brought into focus disparities, injustices, and inequalities that have long been present in the field of surgery, selectively affecting the most vulnerable.
