A review of current ophthalmic anaesthetic practice.

Intro: Ophthalmic surgery ranks among the commonest procedures performed worldwide. This review considers the range of anaesthetic techniques available to the modern ophthalmic anaesthetist, and practical considerations to evaluate in different circumstances. There is a brief summary of the main issues pertaining to the common ophthalmic subspecialties and operations.

Understanding self-reported difficulties in decision-making by people with autism spectrum disorders.

Autobiographical accounts and a limited research literature suggest that adults with autism spectrum disorders can experience difficulties with decision-making. We examined whether some of the difficulties they describe correspond to quantifiable differences in decision-making when compared to adults in the general population. The participants (38 intellectually able adults with autism spectrum disorders and 40 neurotypical adults) were assessed on three tasks of decision-making (Iowa Gambling Task, Cambridge Gamble Task and Information Sampling Task), which quantified, respectively, decision-making performance and relative attention to negative and positive outcomes, speed and flexibility, and information sampling.

Hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis activity in adults with intellectual disabilities: a preliminary investigation.

Background: Cortisol is a marker of physiological arousal, exhibiting a characteristic pattern of diurnal activity. The daily cortisol profile has been xamined extensively and is atypical in a number of clinical disorders. However, there are very few studies focussing on the cortisol profile in adults with intellectual disabilities (ID).

Two-quadrant high-volume sub-Tenon's anaesthesia for vitrectomy: a randomised controlled trial.

Background: Total volume using a standard single inferonasal injection for sub-Tenon's anaesthesia is limited by an increase in intraocular pressure (IOP) and commonly requires the operating surgeon to top-up the block intraoperatively.
