Article Synopsis
  • Chordomas and chondrosarcomas are rare bone cancers at the skull base; proton therapy has shown effectiveness in treating these tumors post-surgery, despite their resistance to radiation.
  • A study at HollandPTC involved 12 patients (9 with chordomas, 3 with chondrosarcomas), examining their treatment data and side effects after receiving advanced intensity-modulated proton therapy (IMPT) between July 2019 and August 2021.
  • Results indicated that IMPT is a feasible follow-up treatment, with manageable side effects (grades 1-3) like dry mouth and inflammation, which resolved within three months after therapy.

Purpose: Morphological magnetic resonance (MR) and computed tomography (CT) features are used in combination with histology for diagnosis and treatment selection of primary bone neoplasms. Isolated functional MRI parameters have shown potential in diagnosis. Our goal is to facilitate diagnosis of primary bone neoplasms of the skull base, mobile spine and sacrum, by a comprehensive approach, combining morphological and functional imaging parameters.
