EAES Multidisciplinary Rapid Guideline: systematic review, meta-analysis, GRADE assessment and evidence-informed recommendations on the surgical management of paraesophageal hernias.

Background: New evidence has emerged since latest guidelines on the management of paraesophageal hernia, and guideline development methodology has evolved. Members of the European Association for Endoscopic Surgery have prioritized the management of paraesophageal hernia to be addressed by pertinent recommendations.

Objective: To develop evidence-informed clinical practice recommendations on paraesophageal hernias, through evidence synthesis and a structured evidence-to-decision framework by an interdisciplinary panel of stakeholders.

Detachable parallel action clamp for endoscopic surgery.

The existing occlusive clamps used in endoscopic surgery are modifications of the basic conventional scissors clamp design used in open surgery. All the current clamps, including atraumatic ones, cause tissue damage. The scissors design is intrinsically unsound because the occlusive force is not uniformly distributed and is much greater near the pivot end than between the free ends of the jaws.

The aim of this study was to evaluate the prevalence of congenital anomalies in 19 areas from 13 European countries. A total of 291,126 births were surveyed. On average most of the anomalies were recorded in livebirths.

Semi-permeable microcapsules for cell culture: ultra-structural characterization.

Microcapsules made from alginate-poly(L-lysine)-alginate membranes have been studied as vehicles for cell culture in a number of laboratories. We have examined their permeability, robustness and ultrastructure in detail. Permeability to globular proteins could be controlled by using poly-lysine of different mean MW in their construction.

Total and subtotal replacement of the common bile duct: effect of transhepatic silicone tube stenting.

The effect of silicone tube stenting on the outcome of total and subtotal replacement of the bile duct with autologous vein was investigated in experiments performed in pigs. All but one of the unstented animals developed dense strictures of the extrahepatic ductal system. This complication was abolished by the use of silicone stents passed transhepatically.
