Ion beam analysis plays an important role in cultural heritage (CH) studies as it offers a combination of simultaneous and complementary analytical techniques (PIXE/PIGE/RBS) and spatially resolved mapping functions. Despite being considered non-destructive, the potential risk of beam-induced modifications during analysis is increasingly discussed. This work focuses on the impact of proton beams on parchment, present in our CH in form of unique historical manuscripts.

We report a case of a 41-year-old female patient presenting with watery diarrhoea and myalgia in the winter-season. Before her symptoms started she had participated in a pig slaughtering with her family. Some of the family members also became ill.

Sorafenib therapy in patients with advanced hepatocellular carcinoma in advanced liver cirrhosis.

Background And Aim: Sorafenib has become the treatment standard for patients with advanced hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC). It is not clear whether patients with advanced liver function impairment (Child B) and patients undergoing additional locoregional therapy may tolerate treatment with sorafenib and benefit. We aimed to evaluate the tolerability and efficiency of sorafenib in patients with advanced HCC and different stages of liver cirrhosis, and in combination with locoregional therapy.

Mannose-binding lectin deficiency confers risk for bacterial infections in a large Hungarian cohort of patients with liver cirrhosis.

Background & Aims: Mannose-binding lectin (MBL) is a serum lectin synthesized by the liver and involved in innate host defense. MBL deficiency increases the risk of various infectious diseases mostly in immune-deficient conditions. Bacterial infections are a significant cause of morbidity and mortality in liver cirrhosis due to the relative immuncompromised state.
