Among White rheumatoid arthritis (RA) cohorts, heart failure with preserved ejection fraction (HFpEF) is the most prevalent type of heart failure (HF). We aimed to assess the type of HF affecting Black RA patients. 64 patients with RA-HF were compared to age-, sex-, and race-matched RA patients without HF.

Acute physiological and functional effects of repetitive shocks on the hand-arm system: a pilot study on healthy subjects.

Exposure to hand-transmitted shocks is a widespread phenomenon in the workplace. Separate risk assessments for shocks do not exist in current international hand-arm vibration regulations, leading to potential underestimation of associated health risks. .

Assessing the Role of Uric Acid as a Predictor of Preeclampsia.

We assessed the diagnostic utility of uric acid for the prediction of preeclampsia. An observational prospective approach was carried out during 2014. Preeclamptic women were classified into 4 groups accordingly to the onset of preeclampsia and the presence of intrauterine growth restriction (IUGR).

Lactic Acid Transport Mediated by Aquaporin-9: Implications on the Pathophysiology of Preeclampsia.

Aquaporin-9 (AQP9) expression is significantly increased in preeclamptic placentas. Since feto-maternal water transfer is not altered in preeclampsia, the main role of AQP9 in human placenta is unclear. Given that AQP9 is also a metabolite channel, we aimed to evaluate the participation of AQP9 in lactate transfer across the human placenta.

Exposure to aflatoxins and fumonisins and linear growth of children in rural Ethiopia: a longitudinal study.

Objective: We hypothesise that exposure to aflatoxins and fumonisins, measured in serum, alters protein synthesis, reducing serum protein and insulin-like growth factor 1 (IGF-1), increasing inflammation and infection, leading to child's linear growth failure.

Design: Children 6-35 months, stratified by baseline stunting, were subsampled from an intervention trial on quality protein maize consumption and evaluated at two time-points.

Setting: Blood samples and anthropometric data were collected in the pre-harvest (August-September 2015) and post-harvest (February 2016) seasons in rural Ethiopia.
