Introduction: It has been well documented that underrepresented faculty in academic medicine are concentrated in lower faculty ranks than their well represented counterparts. This promotion disparity has resulted in concerted efforts by medical institutions to change academic culture and climate surrounding this group. This study provides a more detailed characterization of minority faculty underrepresentation, evaluating longitudinal trends in faculty rank among US medical schools looking particularly at academic rank, region, ownership, institution type, social mission score and research intensity ranking.

Diabetes-Related Lower Limb Amputations in the Rio Grande Valley of Texas: A Focused Look at a Historical Health Disparity.

Background: There are established regional and racial/ethnic disparities in lower limb amputation due to diabetes; risk is higher in people of African American and Hispanic origin, particularly those in South Texas. The studies exposing these disparities in the Lower Rio Grande Valley are not current and are limited in number.

Methods: We collected data from 2011 to 2016 from the United States Census Bureau, Texas Department of State Health Services (DSHS), and Robert Wood Johnson Foundation (RWJF) databases.

The minority tax has been defined as a set of disparities that those who are underrepresented in medicine face in addition to clinical care, education, and research responsibilities. These taxes include systemic racism, diversity efforts, clinical and promotion disparities, lack of faculty development, and isolation. Much has been added to the literature to better define and characterize the minority tax and propose suggestions for mitigations.

Much has been added to the literature to better characterize and define the experiences of faculty who are underrepresented in medicine and other health professions. Additions include approaches for faculty development and suggestions for institutions on how to create equitable environments that promote the success and advancement of this group. Despite all these additions to the literature, health professions educators still lack practical approaches to determine supportive academic health center environments that are receptive to their needs and resourced to promote their career success.
