Combined inhibition of PDGF and VEGF receptors by ellagic acid, a dietary-derived phenolic compound.

The vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) and platelet-derived growth factor (PDGF) receptors play essential and complementary roles in angiogenesis and combined inhibition of these receptors has been shown to result in potent antitumor activity in vivo. In this study, we report that ellagic acid (EA), a natural polyphenol found in fruits and nuts, inhibits VEGF-induced phosphorylation of VEGFR-2 in endothelial cell (EC) as well as PDGF-induced phosphorylation of PDGFR in smooth muscle cells, leading to the inhibition of downstream signaling triggered by these receptors. EA also specifically inhibited VEGF-induced migration of ECs as well as their differentiation into capillary-like tubular structures and abolished PDGF-dependent smooth muscle cell migration.

Evaluation of a new non-isotopic sandwich hybridization for the detection of HIV1-specific PCR products.

A new non-isotopic sandwich hybridization assay was developed to detect human immunodeficiency virus type 1 (HIV1) provirus amplified by the polymerase chain reaction. The sensitivity and specificity of this new technique using 96-well microplates as the support for the sandwich hybridization procedure and stable enzyme-linked oligomer as the detection probe were compared with those of Southern hybridization using a 32P-labelled oligomer probe. Three laboratories studied 437 peripheral blood mononuclear cell samples from 294 different subjects including both HIV1-seropositive and -seronegative individuals.

Rainbow trout p53: cDNA cloning and biochemical characterization.

We have cloned and sequenced the p53-encoding cDNA of rainbow trout (Salmo gairdneri). The encoded product contains the characteristics found in all p53 proteins: (i) the five highly conserved domains, (ii) an acidic N terminus, (iii) a hydrophilic C terminus, and (iv) a penultimate serine residue. Furthermore, we demonstrate that the rainbow trout p53 is able to specifically interact with the SV40 large T antigen.

Impairment of erection after external sphincter resection.

Two cases of temporary loss of reflex erectile activity after transurethral bladder-neck and external sphincter resection are reported in two tetraplegics. Only recently such occurrences have been reported in the literature associated with external sphincterotomy. The reasons are discussed and most likely direct damage to erectile tissues is the cause of such a complication.
