Factors associated with left-handedness were examined in a large sample of adults who suffered with epileptic seizures (n = 446) in an attempt to delineate the concept of pathological left-handedness. Three main pathological factors were found associated with left-handedness: (i) right-hemiparesis of early onset; (ii) cognitive deficit; (iii) evidence of left-hemisphere disease on clinical examination. Familial sinistrality was also associated with left-handedness, independently of the above-mentioned pathological factors.

We have applied the electroshock-induced fighting behavior to the study of experimental alcohol dependence. Adult Wistar rats were intoxicated chronically with ethanol (10 g/kg/24 h) for 13 days. Electroshock-induced fighting behavior was studied during chronic intoxication and withdrawal in comparison with normal rats receiving a water-carbohydrate solution isocaloric to ethanol.

A systematic increase with age of the strong right-handers/mixed right-handers ratio, in normal adults, was found in Algeria, Greece, Italy, France and Spain. This age effect on adult handedness is not easily explained by variations in the social pressure against left-hand use, differential mortality, or information bias. There was no systematic decrease in the frequency of left-handedness with age.
