Mitochondrial pathways of copper neurotoxicity: focus on mitochondrial dynamics and mitophagy.

Copper (Cu) is essential for brain development and function, yet its overload induces neuronal damage and contributes to neurodegeneration and other neurological disorders. Multiple studies demonstrated that Cu neurotoxicity is associated with mitochondrial dysfunction, routinely assessed by reduction of mitochondrial membrane potential. Nonetheless, the role of alterations of mitochondrial dynamics in brain mitochondrial dysfunction induced by Cu exposure is still debatable.

Cystoid Macular Edema Related to Uncomplicated Cataract Surgery and Topical Prostaglandin Analogs: A Systematic Review of Randomized Controlled Trials.

Introduction: Cystoid macular edema (CME) presents with thickening of the macula with an accumulation of fluid due to breakage of the inner and outer blood-retinal barriers. It is referred to as pseudophakic CME (PCME) if it occurs after cataract surgery. PGF2a is a prostaglandin analog (PGA) used to lower intraocular pressure (IOP).

Investigating the relationship between β-carotene intake from diet and supplements, smoking, and lung cancer risk.

β-carotene is a naturally occurring and safe dietary source of vitamin A that is associated with cancer risk reductions when consumed in typical dietary amounts. However, two clinical trials reported increased incidence of lung cancer and total mortality among heavy smokers taking β-carotene supplements (20 or 30 mg/day). Based on these findings, the Joint FAO/WHO Expert Committee on Food Additives withdrew Acceptable Daily Intake values for β-carotene (0-5 mg/kg bw).

Challenges in advancing Schwann cell transplantation for spinal cord injury repair.

Background Aims: In this article we aimed to provide an expert synthesis of the current status of Schwann cell (SC)therapeutics and potential steps to increase their clinical utility.

Methods: We provide an expert synthesis based on preclinical, clinical and manufacturing experience.

Results: Schwann cells (SCs) are essential for peripheral nerve regeneration and are of interest in supporting axonal repair after spinal cord injury (SCI).

Prevalence of the cefazolin inoculum effect (CzIE) in nasal colonizing methicillin-susceptible in patients from intensive care units in Colombia and use of a modified rapid nitrocefin test for detection.

The cefazolin inoculum effect (CzIE) has been associated with poor clinical outcomes in patients with methicillin-susceptible (MSSA) infections. We aimed to investigate the point prevalence of the CzIE among nasal colonizing MSSA isolates from ICU patients in a multicenter study in Colombia (2019-2023). Patients underwent nasal swabs to assess for colonization on admission to the ICU, and some individuals had follow-up swabs.
