Unlabelled: Metatranscriptomics is uncovering more and more diverse families of viruses with RNA genomes comprising the viral kingdom Orthornavirae in the realm Riboviria. Thorough protein annotation and comparison are essential to get insights into the functions of viral proteins and virus evolution. In addition to sequence- and hmm profile‑based methods, protein structure comparison adds a powerful tool to uncover protein functions and relationships.

In vitro relative cytotoxicity (IC ()/IC () of ()-3-(4'-methylbenzylidene)-4-chromanone () towards human Molt 4/C8 and CEM T-lymphocytes showed a >50-fold increase in comparison to those of the respective tetralone derivative (). On the other hand, such an increase was not observed in the analogous 4-OCH ( and ) derivatives. In order to study whether thiol reactivity-as a possible basis of the mechanism of action-correlates with the observed cytotoxicities, the kinetics of the non-enzyme catalyzed reactions with reduced glutathione (GSH) and N-acetylcysteine (NAC) of and were investigated.

Article Synopsis
  • A taxonomic review of the genus Aphestia led to the identification of seven new species and the revalidation of two existing species, increasing the total known species to eleven.
  • The review also involved the revalidation of other related species and proposed new combinations, including the transfer of one species to a different genus.
  • Detailed descriptions, including illustrations and distribution maps, were provided to help differentiate between the species, along with a key for identifying Aphestia species.
