Over the last ten years, researchers' efforts have aimed to replace the classic linear economy model with the circular economy model, favoring green chemical and industrial processes. From this point of view, biologically active molecules, coming from plants, flowers and biomass, are gaining considerable value. In this study, firstly we focus on the development of a green protocol to obtain the purification of anthocyanins from the flower of , based on simulation and on response surface optimization methodology.

MALDI-TOF MS: A Reliable Tool in the Real Life of the Clinical Microbiology Laboratory.

Matrix-Assisted Desorption/Ionization-Time of Flight Mass Spectrometry (MALDI-TOF MS) in the last decade has revealed itself as a valid support in the workflow in the clinical microbiology laboratory for the identification of bacteria and fungi, demonstrating high reliability and effectiveness in this application. Its use has reduced, by 24 h, the time to obtain a microbiological diagnosis compared to conventional biochemical automatic systems. MALDI-TOF MS application to the detection of pathogens directly in clinical samples was proposed but requires a deeper investigation, whereas its application to positive blood cultures for the identification of microorganisms and the detection of antimicrobial resistance are now the most useful applications.

The Laboratory Diagnosis of Malaria: A Focus on the Diagnostic Assays in Non-Endemic Areas.

Even if malaria is rare in Europe, it is a medical emergency and programs for its control should ensure both an early diagnosis and a prompt treatment within 24-48 h from the onset of the symptoms. The increasing number of imported malaria cases as well as the risk of the reintroduction of autochthonous cases encouraged laboratories in non-endemic countries to adopt diagnostic methods/algorithms. Microscopy remains the gold standard, but with limitations.

Ferroptosis: Emerging Role in Diseases and Potential Implication of Bioactive Compounds.

Ferroptosis is a form of cell death that is distinguished from other types of death for its peculiar characteristics of death regulated by iron accumulation, increase in ROS, and lipid peroxidation. In the past few years, experimental evidence has correlated ferroptosis with various pathological processes including neurodegenerative and cardiovascular diseases. Ferroptosis also is involved in several types of cancer because it has been shown to induce tumor cell death.

Anti-Aggregative and Protective Effects of Vicenin-2 on Heat and Oxidative Stress-Induced Damage on Protein Structures.

Vicenin-2, a flavonoid categorized as a flavones subclass, exhibits a distinctive and uncommon C-glycosidic linkage. Emerging evidence challenges the notion that deglycosylation is not a prerequisite for the absorption of C-glycosyl flavonoid in the small intestine. Capitalizing on this experimental insight and considering its biological attributes, we conducted different assays to test the anti-aggregative and antioxidant capabilities of vicenin-2 on human serum albumin under stressful conditions.
