Article Synopsis
  • Oral squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC) is a prevalent cancer worldwide, with rising cases among non-smokers prompting a need to investigate dietary influences alongside smoking.
  • This scoping review utilized a systematic approach to assess the relationship between diet and OSCC, analyzing data from 17 studies involving over 10,000 patients primarily from countries with high human development.
  • Findings suggest that higher consumption of fruits, vegetables, and tea may reduce OSCC risk, while diets high in salty meats, dairy, and fried/spicy foods could increase it, highlighting the need for standardized research to clarify these associations.

The objective of this work was to optimize the application of an enzymatic blend produced by Aspergillus niger ATCC 1004 on the Pimenta dioica fruits for essential oil extraction. The enzyme blend was obtained from the fermentation of cocoa bean shells, an agro-industrial residue. The effects of the enzymatic pre-treatment on the extraction yield, the chemical composition of the oil through gas chromatography, and the fruit structure through scanning electron microscopy (SEM) were assessed.

Nanotechnology has brought significant advancements to agriculture through the development of engineered nanomaterials (ENPs). Silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) capped with polysaccharides have been applied in agricultural diagnostics, crop pest management, and seed priming. Hyaluronic acid (HA), a natural polysaccharide with bactericidal properties, has been considered a growth regulator for plant tissues and an inducer of systemic resistance against plant diseases.

Article Synopsis
  • Sarcoidosis can be tricky to diagnose because it shares symptoms with cancers; this report discusses a case of a woman with both ovarian and endometrial cancers who had unusual lung findings after treatment.
  • Imaging suggested cancer recurrence due to the presence of lung nodules and swollen lymph nodes, but further tests showed no cancer cells, only inflammation from treatment.
  • The inflammation surprisingly went away on its own, highlighting the need for teamwork in medical diagnoses and the critical role of lab tests in differentiating between actual cancer and reactions to chemotherapy.
