Effective detection of microbiological contaminations present in medicinal cellular products is a crucial step to ensure patients' safety. In recent decades, several rapid microbiological methods have been developed and validated, but variabilities linked to the use of different resources have led to discordant validation of methods and performance results. Considering this, while developing an in-house BacT/Alert-based method, we evaluated all of the materials used in its validation.

During active surveillance at the Mediterranean Institute for Transplantation and Advanced Specialized Therapies (ISMETT, Palermo, Italy) with the CARBA screening medium, five pairs of Klebsiella pneumoniae carbapenemase (KPC)-producing K. pneumoniae and Escherichia coli strains were isolated in each of five colonized patients. In each patient, lateral gene transfer was demonstrated by comparing K.

It is well known that the abnormal accumulation of lipids can occur in kidneys of patients affected by some metabolic disorders due either to inherited enzymatic deficiency or to an acquired lipid alteration as in nephrotic syndrome. Lipoprotein glomerulopathy (LG), briefly described in a patient of Koitabashi in 1987 in a review on renal lipidoses authored by Faraggiana and Churg, represents an emerging novel storage renal disease. This rare and unique nephropathy is characterized by the presence of lipoprotein thrombi in dilated glomerular capillary lumina associated with type III hyperlipoproteinemia, and high serum levels of apolipoprotein E (apo E).

Background: Despite substantial progress in medical care, the mortality rate remains unacceptably high in dialysis patients. Evidence suggests that bone mineral dismetabolism (CKD-MBD) might contribute to this burden of death. However, to date only a few papers have investigated the clinical relevance of serum mineral derangements and the impact of different therapeutic strategies on mortality in a homogeneous cohort of south European dialysis patients.

Delivering prescription drugs directly to patients at the moment of discharge from the hospital is a useful tool for ensuring continuity in patient drug use, improving prescriptive appropriateness, limiting pharmaceutical expenditure and analyzing pharmacoepidemiological data. A project was therefore conducted from April 2005 to January 2007, at the G. Rumino hospital in Benevento (Italy), to encourage the direct delivery of drugs to patients upon discharge.
