Persistent increase of Nogo-A-positive cells and dynamic reduction in oligodendroglia lineage cells in white matter regions following experimental and clinical traumatic brain injury.

White matter (WM) disruption and atrophy is a consequence of traumatic brain injury (TBI) and contributes to persisting cognitive impairment. An increased expression of the myelin-associated axonal outgrowth inhibitor Nogo-A and oligodendrocyte pathology might be negatively associated with postinjury WM changes. Here, we analyzed brain tissue from severe TBI patients, obtained by surgical decompression in the early postinjury phase and postmortem brain tissue of long-term TBI survivors and observed an increased number of Nogo-A+ cells in WM tracts such as the corpus callosum (CC).

Recent studies have identified a crucial link between glycolysis and neutrophil cellular functions. Using human neutrophils, we have investigated the intricate relationship between glycolysis, extracellular glucose availability, and the enzyme 6-phosphofructo-2-kinase/fructose-2,6-bisphosphatase 3 (PFKFB3), in the regulation of reactive oxygen species (ROS) and neutrophil extracellular trap (NET) production.

Satellite microglia: marker of traumatic brain injury and regulator of neuronal excitability.

Traumatic brain injury is a leading cause of chronic neurologic disability and a risk factor for development of neurodegenerative disease. However, little is known regarding the pathophysiology of human traumatic brain injury, especially in the window after acute injury and the later life development of progressive neurodegenerative disease. Given the proposed mechanisms of toxic protein production and neuroinflammation as possible initiators or contributors to progressive pathology, we examined phosphorylated tau accumulation, microgliosis and astrogliosis using immunostaining in the orbitofrontal cortex, a region often vulnerable across traumatic brain injury exposures, in an age and sex-matched cohort of community traumatic brain injury including both mild and severe cases in midlife.

Lives of Irish Adolescents Who Were Born With a Cleft (LIA-Cleft).

Objective: The objective was to describe the lives of adolescents, who were born with cleft lip and palate (CL/P), in comparison to the general population as recorded in Growing up in Ireland (GUI), the national longitudinal study of children and youth.

Design: This was a cross-sectional study. The study was performed in a cleft center at a university teaching hospital.

Challenges to accessing behaviour support services for people with intellectual disability before and after the NDIS.

Background: This study investigated the extent to which behaviour support services are accessible under Australia's National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS).

Method: We conducted semi-structured interviews with families who support a member with an intellectual disability and challenging behaviour. We analysed this data with a supply and demand access framework initially designed for health care and described the lived experiences of participants and their families accessing behaviour supports.
